(1 votes) Actually, this was my cousin's dinner that we brought back from the restaurant. Thanks to him for being so patient as I clicked away at his meal.
Also, thanks to my aunt for lending me all of the props.
The shot was taken in my aunt and uncle's kitchen (in Japan). I used a stool for my "table" and the kitchen curtains as my backdrop. The curtains are a very sheer fabric, which worked perfectly to diffuse light. I criss-crossed two curtains, pulling one over the stool, and placed a speedlight between the two so that the light would hit bounce everywhere between them and create some nice backlighting. Since the shot was taken at night, my only light sources were the speed lights.
The second speed light was placed inside a small lightbox that was held in place by my wife approximately 3ft above and to the left of the subject to create my front lighting.
The backlight was set higher than the front light to accentuate the transluscence of the food. There is a little bit of flare that I'm still debating whether I like or not. I put it there on purpose, but I'd like to hear some feedback on that.
BTS photo to come.

OfflineI, at first, had some trouble locating the flare. I kept looking around the outside of the image for a "light leak". When I finally found it, in the center, I though at first it was just a bit of "off color" from unknown causes. I think it either needs to be a bit stronger to make it immediately identifiable, or removed so the image (fish) is color correct. I would have tried to place it somewhere other than on a piece of the main food. Flare from the saki glass (liquid) or maybe the ginger in the corner of the plate.
It must be nice to get real sushi instead of from the local grocery store in Charlotte, NC. I had to put 1/2 bottle of oil on mine to keep it moist. I would guess your's was all natural! I declined to use the provided ginger in my shot as I could never get it to look similar to real food. It was more like moist wood shavings.
I'd be happy to sample the plate, although I prefer the small flying fish roe to the larger stuff. Probably an old off-shoot of my younger days fishing with eggs (as bait) that looked a little more like these.

OfflineHi Tim,
I would agree to get rid of the flare. It also seems a bit washed out in the upper left portion of the frame ( too much light maybe? ) I love the composition of the subjects though I feel it's a bit too tight to the bottom of the frame. Maybe a little more room at the bottom could take care of this. Now, being a sushi lover I would gladly have eaten that
Will we see you tonight?
Cheers,
Noah
