A ring shot. Lets practice in jewelry photography: it can be with or without gemstone, classic or creative (creative is better:-) shot of the ring. There are tons of free tutorials for jewelry photographers we have here on photigy (check out our “Jewelry” tutorials) as well as comprehensive e-book, called “DIY Solutions for jewelry photographer“.
The winner(s) will receive $150 worth of goods from BHphotogtraphy.com, and may be more: we constantly working on finding more sponsors of the show, meaning sooner or later we’ll have even more prizes.

OfflineWell here is my shot. I hot glued the ring to a tiny dowel and had 1 light above with a strip box. I used a DIY light table made of translucent translum and in front I had a white piece of foam core with a hole cut out for my camera. I covered as much of the sides as possible to block all dark reflections. I also covered the top of the whole thing with a piece of the translucent plastic. No light directly hit the ring.
I used a macro lens I borrowed and it was an Vivitar 70-200mm fully manual lens from the late 1970's so no EXIF data was recorded. I'm sure I was set at 70mm and around f/8 but I really have no clue. It was shot at 1/200 of a second. I used a Manfrotto 454 focusing rail for this and took a whopping 32 photos which I merged in photoshop, then blended together. I'm still in the post processing stage and still have about 4 more hours to go to complete.
Here is the image in progress along with 4 behind the scenes photos of my setup.

OfflineHere is my submission. Used two flashes to light from underneath the table and one flash bounced from foil to lighten the diamonds. I used 100mm macro lens took about 6 images and focus stacked in PS.
I guess its too much black spots on the ring it was caused from two black cardboards positioned on each side of the ring, I put that to give depth to a shiny object. Not sure if it works?
Thanks

OfflineMy submission for the ring shot:![]()

A bit frustrating that I managed to travel to my shooting space and realise I'd left the translum at home…I had one small cut off piece in the van,so had to make do with just a half cone shape diffusion. I also cut a hole for the lens in some white mount board then placed it on the camera. The ring was placed on a small piece of white perspex, held upright by some dental wax.
Three lights, two with 10 degree grids and one with a snoot (the nearest light was eventually angled slightly towards the white mount board to provide some front lighting) . I tried using the speedlight hand held from above to highlight the stones but the surface of them is very pitted and it was having little or no effect. It's the fiirst time I've used a focusing rail, 11 shots taken, which I'm not sure was quite enough as I've had to do one hell of a lot of post processing on this.
Lessons I've learned:
1. DO NOT leave home without important items..
2.DO NOT shoot old dirty jewellery in bad condition (dents/scratches etc) unless I want to lose hours of my life in photoshop…
3. DO NOT use too much wax to hold jewellery in place, as this will only add to the misery of No.2

OfflineAlex and all,
This is my submission for this assignment. This time the challenge was to decide which ring to use and what memories or emotion I wanted to portrait in the shot. This ring is made to be given as a gift for a special Occasion. I found that working with very small shinny items, specially used jewelry, require a lot of cleaning, a process that was probably longer than the shot setup. I tried several ways to hold the ring up in the air, fishing line, wood stick painted white, but finally found that very thin memory wire held the ring well and was easy to paint over in Photoshop.
The setup was my DIY shooting table, two soft boxes with strobes and two flash. The soft boxes with strobes were positioned to the right and left and slightly towards the back of the table. One flash, from the front left, was used to highlight the ring. A second flash, with yellow gel, was used to light the translucent white background from the back to give it some coloring. To give the ring some dark edges, I added a black card reflector on top and a smaller one on the right side. Minor post production was done in Photoshop to erase the wire that held the ring in the air, removed some dust spot and boosted the colors and sharpened it slightly.
