hi! my question is if the following option is good for product photography, food …? 50mm 1: 1.4 manual focus lens carl zeiss planar ZE EF MOUNT (second hand), mounted on a Canon 5D Mark 4, and I will use an ipad to see the focus.

Being manual will the work be too slow? With this option I will have more sharpness? now I am shooting with a Canon 50mm f1.4.

I’m sorry my English if I don’t make myself understood correctly, thank you very much.

Hi Justin, I don’t know that lens but it sounds like a good one. Another great lens for food is the Canon 100mm macro 2.8 it’s perfect for food too. Macro lenses are good and the faster the better so 1.4 or 2.8.
Before you shoot fix your focus manually. Are you shooting in studio with strobes or in natural light? Either way do you put your camera on live view and zoom in close and adjust focus manually if you are on a tripod. then don’t bump it! I bought a sony a73 recently and it has the best auto focus ever…I use it for events, weddings etc but recently shot a restaurant with a small stobe set up and hand held my canon 5d mk3 and used auto focus for that with the EF 100mm f2.8 macro lens. I use this also for product photography but on a tripod and focus manually.
      Hope this helps!

Justin – manual focus lens will work, however, it will be slower and potentially harder for software to stitch images because when you’ll re-focus the lens manually, you may slightly shift the image. However, if your camera is secure enough on a tripod, it won’t be an issue if done carefully.
