Retouching Amethyst Ring Part 2

In part 2 of the retouching of the amethyst ring, she is going to sharpen the center stone (amethyst). She does a quick mask, paints with the brush, unclicks the quick mask , then goes to Select- Inverse and adds a new Layer.

At that point she says “Uh Oh”, the stone is not in the layer, approximately 10 min into the lesson. It is never explained what she did to remove the dotted line around the stone or how she got it to appear in the layer. Please give a bit of insight of what was done to correct the problem.

Update, in the retouching class, the current version of Photoshop, you cannot just add a new layer. You must go to the top of the screen, got Layer> New > Layer from Copy
