It’s taken a while to get my studio together. Finally there is something coming out of it. I could groom these shots forever. I would appreciate some constructive criticism. See attached images.

      Hello Colten,

I assume this is a composite shot, though I haven’t seen any BTS images 🙂

Personally, I think it looks really great, I mean it has a great overall impression.

A few things which are instantly come to my mind:
      1. The background looks cool and bright, though it’s taking too much attention from the actual product. Maybe slightly less intensity would work better in this case, since the main goal is to show the product at its best.

      2. Somehow the upper part of the bottle looks too dark, especially the cap. It has to be equal to the label by brightness (at least). The part right under the cap has to catch some light, and now it’s also very dark compared to the best part of the bottle. The same thing with the bottom part, it could be brighter as well.

      3. I also would fix masking issues around the label, there’s a visible transition between the glass and the label, thus more precise work is required for that part. I know it’s pretty annoying and time-consuming sometimes to create those masks with a pen tool, but it has to be done for smooth results.

      4. The glass shiness could be more intense, but it depends on how you’d like to represent the product (or your client). It’s a good option to have different results just in case.
Below is my quick fix in Photoshop.

I’m using a Nikon D800. Thanks for the input you guys. The bottle was lit from behind using a snoot which doesn’t cover all of it. I developing a method to light from underneath. Maybe that will be better. Some have criticized the shot for being too plain and it needs something interesting in it. However I’m more interested in demonstrating that I understand the core fundamentals like detail, tonality, complimentary color schemes and propping. I know the label needs a lot of work. But I like getting feedback before delving too deep. This is mostly a test. Not serious work yet. The bottle isn’t ideal. I had to radically straighten the top label and a good bit of the copy is swallowed up on the primary label. I’m getting there.

I have some more coming. I’m getting ready to graduate from Denver University with a Masters in information and communications technology. Thank god that’s over with. Takes away so much time I need to spend shooting.
