A topic which is not directly related to jewellery photography, but probably worth talking about it. Especially for all those who are just getting started, and maybe do not have an own studio or shop yet.

Once you’ve made yourself a name, and got interest of customers when doing jewellery photography or videos, you probably might also attract interest of burglars as well. Since there will be times when you have to store the objects at home or in your studio until finished.

How do you handle this? Alarm systems? Safes? Insurances?
And what are your experiences so far?

Hi Nico! This is actually a really great discussion theme! I can only speak for myself here, but I have alarm, great insurance and a safe in my house that I use for this.
The safe is multipurpose though, as it can also store backup servers for images/files etc.

But yeah, this could potentially validate as a huge risk for those who do not think about it.

      How are yours?

      Hi,

I am actually just about to get started. Got a few customers interested in my works I’ve done so far – still not perfect (mainly fighting with dust, scratched jewelry or the very little space to work with), but already caught attention. Therefore I need to start thinking of safety, like how to get the jewelry transported, or locked away.

For doing the first few jobs I will try to avoid gathering too high valuables at once. What amounts of values are you working with, on average? To get a feeling how other photo-/videographers are handling their jobs and safety. Have you already had some bad experiences since doing your jobs?

And also, are there some tipps to keep in mind according to contracts for receiving the jewelry from your customer? Is it their part to set up a contract which states “Person XY gets article XYZ for video purposes”, or is this rather part of the videographer to bring when receiving your stuff?

(Hopefully my English is sufficient to describe what I am actually meaning :D)

Safety isn’t only a thing to think of when at home/studio, and already begins when meeting your customer. Would be helpful to know whether to get your objects rather personally, or renting a transporting service, or maybe even shipping?

How do you handle this, or are there some useful hints which I should keep in mind when meeting my first customers?
