What is the easiest way to photograph flat jewelry like watches, necklaces and other subjects that lay down flat on a shooting table?

Here is an awesome and very simple technique that can be used for jewelry photography of flat subjects, demonstrated during Friday Photo Talk with Alex Koloskov.
It allows a photographer to create a shiny look of glossy metal and make gemstones be bright and sparkly.
