I have purchased several jewelry tutorials and almost done going through all of them, but have not yet seen any info on semi-precious gemstones, or transparent stones that radiate reflections back at the viewer, such as moonstone (purple/blue radiance) and (Ethiopian) opal (green/blue radiance). Any specific tutorials on this?

Any guidance on how to properly capture this in-camera and how to retouch it so that the gemstone is nice and bright and still shows the reflections/radiances? I can capture the radiances with small speedlights (hard light) but the stone is still transparent and cannot figure out how to composite everything in photoshop for good result.

Looking at websites like moonmagic.com, which has great moonstone and opal gemstone images (rings, etc.) – how do they do that? The gemstones look heavily photoshop’d but look good…any insights on how it’s done?
