Light exploding from a book

I want to recreate a scene from a Harry Potter movie where Harry returns from being inside a book. Light explodes from the book and Harry is shot out into a chair. Shot will use rear curtain sync to freeze a model and leaning chair. Streaks can be produced by controlled movement and a longer shutter speed. I can get a book to have its pages fanned outward as if an explosion of light did it. What I am looking for the best way to produce the explosion of light rays from the book. Create in PS using stroked paths, copy and pasted until it looks right? I can composite well. Any other suggested ways to explode the book with rays of light?
