Props

I am confused about props and backgrounds in different photos. When I shoot a lifestyle photo I want props and background to tell a story. If I do so with just a product shot people reply it is distracting. What is the difference between an advertising, product or lifestyle photo and when to use props? Is a product shot always with as less props as possible?
