This is my first assignment and my first attempt at jewelry photography.
Not being a product photographer, I need to improvise a lot to make up for weak lights, and the lack of certain accessories and tools. My Photoshop composite game is also quite… uncomplex. But I’m working my way up all these impediments. Here are my 3 attempts, none with fancy jewelry because I don’t own any.
– warm up: a horrendously chipped and cracked old trinket with an organic leafy background.
– tri-coloured amber silver ring with matching ‘autumny’ colours.
– black agate silver ring (to work on some facets too).Setup as seen in the BTS, 2 speedlights, large stripbox and small softbox, plus diffusers. Nikon Z6, macro 60mm on manual focus for ring 1 and 2, then 70mm (not macro) on AF for the 3rd ring.
1/100 sec
f/18
ISO 100
(+ f/ variations for background bokeh)One last detail: manual focus stacking (Photoshop bloody hates me, it made a mess of all my auto-blending attempts). Also, I felt that using coloured flags (leaves) helped the rings fit better into the décor.
