Some beginning photographers may think that they won’t be able to get a great image until they have as much equipment as long time professional photographers. It’s not true. All you need is a single light, softbox and any dslr camera.

You will learn to:
• Make several photos with different lighting in order to get as much material as you may need
• Create a high-end commercial image by composing them into one shot with using two basic Photoshop tools: Eraser Tool, Layer Mask

  1. Again .. a great video, Thanks Ilya .. why you changed the light a lot, wouldn’t that be possible with 4 pictures where light is right, left, back and from top ?

    • Thank you!

Since it takes just a couple of minutes to take 15-20 images with different light I prefer to do it and choose images I like the best later. But you’re absolutely right, if you are willing to spend some extra time and check results during the photo shoot you can do it this way. it’s up to you.

  2. Great work, Ilya. And good results! Shows what can be done with some basic Photoshop skills.

  3. Ilya, It is a great tutorial. I’m so impressed with your simple but professional results. In my case I’m still locking with the Photoshop technique. I’m trying to find a good video tutorial with detail explanation. Looking forward to see your new video tutorials.

  4. Thanks Ilya,
This video combined with the video on masking and selecting make an awesome pair of informational videos to get a shot with the use of a single light.

    • Absolutely.

There’s this thing about Photoshop. You can take any part of any tutorial and make a tutorial about it :) Photoshop gives endless creative power. Let’s take tutorial about masking and clipping. You can easily make a tutorial about Eraser Tool. You can go further and make a tutorial about brushes used in Eraser Tool. Then you can make a tutorial about every one of those brushes.

I’m using Photoshop since 1998 and I still feel like I only know 20% of it )

  5. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of just how much can be achieved with just a single light. Nicely done Ilya. :)

  6. Thanks Ilya! The result is awesome! I think it’s more difficult than it seems looking at your tutorial. I suppose, that it is necessary to have very clear ideas how it should be the final image. Great video :)

    • Trust me, it is as simple as it looks like :) You can see how I was randomly taking pictures in order to get all parts of the product lit one by one. And than you just compare different images in Photoshop, mask them and unmask parts that you liked.

It is also always a good idea to find some references in the internet before you start retouching. There are tons of great images you can look at and compare to yours.
